This article introduces you to three important pension funds in the UK that were picked from our researched list targeting the largest pension schemes in the United Kingdom.

1. Greater Manchester Pension Fund (Manchester)

The Greater Mnchester Pension Fund (GMPF) has over 375,000 members and is the largest fund out of 88 in the local government pension scheme. The pension fund is the eleventh biggest in the UK and they pay over £750M of benefits every year. The GMPF has over 500 employers with 170 of them looking after the members’ pensions. The fund invests in five asset classes, namely public equity, bonds, cash, property, and alternative assets.

2. Railways Pension Scheme (London)

The Railways Pension Scheme (RPS) represents more than 150 rail companies and has almost 340,00 active and retired members. Therefore, the RPS is one of the largest pension arrangements in the UK. In 2021 the fund had a total of £36,7B in assets under managements and paid out £1,199M in benefits. The pension is open to all eligible rail employees and others who have a legal right to join.

3. West Midlands Pension Fund (Wolverhampton)

The West Midlands Pension Fund (WMPF) manages £11,5B assets and focuses on creating reliable growth in the long term and delivering the employees pensions when needed. The three different membership categories consist of actively contributing members who are employed at the scheme employers, members who are no longer employed but have a deferred entitlement and members receiving the pension.
